Indigenous Arts Initiatives

Victoria’s contemporary Indigenous culture is diverse and based on tens of thousands of years of cultural practice. Art, craft, dance, music, performance and story-telling have long been central to the traditions of Aboriginal people in Victoria.

Creative Victoria is committed to celebrating, strengthening and promoting Victoria’s Indigenous arts and providing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to develop their careers.

Our Indigenous Arts Initiatives include:

Nyernila – Listen Continuously: Aboriginal Creation Stories of Victoria

Nyernila – which means to listen continuously – brings together creation stories from across Victoria; stories about the land, the animals and the people.

The Victorian Indigenous Art Awards

The Victorian Indigenous Art Awards showcase the quality and diversity of art practice among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in Victoria, and the unique character of south east Australia’s Indigenous visual art and culture.

Indigenous Partnerships

Creative Victoria partners with a range of organisations to foster the development of Indigenous arts practice in Victoria and provide opportunities for Victoria’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Creative Victoria also offers opportunities for individual artists and arts workers through the Indigenous Professional Development Program.
