Melbourne Winter Masterpieces

Introduced in 2004, Melbourne Winter Masterpieces is the name for an annual series of major exhibitions which balance curatorial excellence with popular appeal.

The exhibitions are sourced from prestigious galleries and institutions from around the world.

Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great

National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)

Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great showcases one of the world’s greatest art collections. Featuring works by artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Velázquez and Van Dyck, the exhibition offers over 400 outstanding works including the finest group of Dutch and Flemish art to come to Australia.

The objectives of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces are to:

  • Offer Victorians the opportunity to experience exclusive art exhibitions of the highest international standards.
  • Stage the exhibition in winter, in line with the Victorian Major Events Company and Tourism Victoria's winter tourism strategies. This attracts high numbers of international and interstate visitors and generates significant tourism and economic benefits to Victoria.
  • Achieve high levels of positive media coverage about Melbourne as well as generate destinational marketing opportunities for Melbourne.
