What are the Arts?

Rummaging through the Arts Victoria archives we came across this series of advertisements to promote the arts in the State and the work of what was then the Ministry for the Arts. These press ads date back to 1981 and provide an idea of Victoria's arts offering at the time.

Arts Centre Melbourne was in the final stages of its development, St Martins Youth Arts Centre and the Meat Market Craft Centre had recently opened, the State Film Centre offered free film screenings in Macarthur Street, the Jolly Jumbuck bus travelled the state telling stories, and the Victorian Government declared 1981 a year of music.

The ads, the work of the Ministry's first Public Affairs Officer, were part of an effort to raise the public profile of the arts in Victoria, promote a raft of new arts facilities and encourage participation.

Have a look through the images and get a sense of Victoria finding its arts and cultural feet, less than a decade after the establishment of the Ministry for the Arts.
